Sauternes
Sauternes is Bordeaux’s most celebrated sweet wine appellation, located south of Graves along the Garonne River. Crafted primarily from Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle, these wines are shaped by noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea, which concentrates sugars and intensifies flavor. Sauternes wines are renowned for their richness and complexity, offering layers of honey, apricot, marmalade, tropical fruit, and toasted almond balanced by vibrant acidity. Lusciously textured yet remarkably fresh, they are capable of aging for decades, developing deeper notes of caramel, spice, and dried fruit over time.
