The wine
Few names in Italy command the awe of Soldera. The late Gianfranco's Case Basse estate, now in family hands, farms Montalcino with near-obsessive devotion to pure Sangiovese, bottled here in magnum. The 2019 is ethereal and uncompromising, a wine that wears its legend lightly and its structure for decades.
Luminous garnet, deceptively pale, it unfurls on wild cherry, pomegranate, dried rose and orange peel. The palate is weightless yet endlessly persistent, red fruit threaded with sweet tobacco, leather and forest floor. Tannins are silken but pervasive, acidity electric. The finish drifts on dried flowers and warm earth, seemingly without end.
