The wine
Château Angélus, the Saint-Émilion estate raised to Premier Grand Cru Classé A, made a benchmark in the storied 2005 vintage. Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the limestone foot of the côte give a wine of generosity and grip, now entering its long plateau of maturity.
Deep garnet bricking at the rim. The bouquet is sumptuous and tertiary: plum, black cherry, truffle, leather, cigar box, and warm spice. The palate is full and silken, the once-formidable tannins resolved to suede, dark fruit carried on a savoury, mineral current. The finish is broad, harmonious, and exceptionally long.
