The wine
Palmer rivals first growths from its Margaux perch, its Cabernet-Merlot blend famed for a perfume that borders on the seductive. The 2012 has reached that lovely middle passage, primary fruit softening into something more complex and savoury. A wine drinking beautifully now, with years still in reserve.
Deep garnet with a maturing rim, it offers cassis, dark cherry and the violet-and-rose lift that defines Margaux, over cigar box, truffle and warm earth. The palate is supple and harmonious, fruit yielding to leather and graphite, tannins now silken. Fresh acidity holds the shape, and the finish carries sweet spice and tobacco at length.
