The wine
Collines l'If is the second wine of l'If, Jacques Thienpont's Saint-Émilion estate run with the same exacting hand as his fabled Le Pin. Merlot from limestone and clay gives flesh and fragrance early. The 2018, a ripe and generous vintage, offers a real taste of that pedigree without the wait.
Deep ruby with a purple rim. Plummy black cherry, blueberry, and crushed violet lead, followed by cocoa, fresh tobacco, and a chalky limestone lift. The palate is round and velvety, supple tannins cushioning ripe dark fruit, acidity keeping it fresh and lifted. Oak is gentle and integrated. The finish lingers on dark berries, mocha, and cool stone.
Why we chose it
“A Thienpont calling card, plush Merlot over Saint-Émilion chalk.”
