The wine
Cos d'Estournel, the pagoda-crowned super-second of Saint-Estephe, has long blurred the line between classed growth and first. Cabernet Sauvignon leads a Merlot-supported blend on the appellation's deep gravel and clay. The opulent yet structured 2019 vintage suits the estate's ambitious, exotic style to perfection.
Nnear-opaque ruby, it offers a layered nose of cassis, black cherry, cedar and an exotic curl of incense, sandalwood and dark spice. The palate is rich and densely woven, tannins powerful but ripe and polished, fruit deep and black. Graphite, mocha and tobacco build through a long, sumptuous, finely framed finish of real grandeur.
