The wine
Romano dal Forno rewrote what Valpolicella could be, and his Superiore is no everyday red but a Veneto monument in miniature. Grapes from the Monte Lodoletta estate are dried before pressing, then raised in new oak. The result, even in this classified tier, drinks with the gravity of a serious Amarone.
Nearly opaque purple-black, it pours thick with kirsch, dried fig, cocoa and crushed dark flowers. The palate is profound and glossy, near-sweet in its concentration yet held together by ripe Corvina tannin and a vein of sour-cherry acidity. Espresso, bitter chocolate and dried herb linger on a finish that seems to have no end.
Why we chose it
“Valpolicella's name on the label, but a thunderclap in the glass.”
