The wine
Tucked in the heart of Barbaresco village, De Forville has farmed traditionally for five generations, ageing in large Slavonian oak that lets the fruit speak plainly. This is honest, unadorned Nebbiolo with no makeup and nothing to prove. The 2021 vintage brings ripeness and freshness in equal measure.
Bright ruby-garnet in the glass, opening on raspberry, dried orange peel and a whiff of rose hip. The palate is sappy and gripping, red-fruited and energetic, with chalky tannins framing tart cherry and a savoury, almost balsamic edge. Cinnamon and dried herbs trail the finish, which stays taut, fresh and persistent. Old-school value done right.
