The wine
Elio Sandri farms a few precious hectares in the Perno cru of Monforte d'Alba by hand, ploughing with horses and ageing in large old wood, a vigneron working as Barolo was made generations ago. This Riserva, drawn from the warm 2017 vintage and held back for years, is traditional Nebbiolo of uncommon depth.
Classic pale garnet, already showing tile at the rim. The nose is haunting: dried rose, tar, sour cherry, leather, dried orange and forest floor. The palate is structured and austere, those famous Monforte tannins gripping firmly around bright acidity and red fruit. Truffle and licorice deepen the mid-palate. The finish is dry, savoury and remarkably persistent.
Why we chose it
“Horse-ploughed, hand-built Barolo: tar, roses and tannin that does not flinch.”
