The wine
Angelo Gaja made Barbaresco a name spoken alongside the great wines of the world, and this bottling remains the house calling card. Drawn from fourteen parcels across the village, it is Nebbiolo at its most aristocratic: perfume and steel in the same breath, delicate yet utterly unyielding. The 2019 is a vintage of poise.
Pale garnet, almost translucent, releasing violet, crushed strawberry and a curl of woodsmoke. The palate is silk laid over granite, tannins fine but relentless, threaded with sour cherry, white pepper and dried herbs. Liquorice and tar deepen toward a finish of extraordinary length and lift. A wine that whispers rather than shouts.
