The wine
A jewel-box property of barely over a hectare on Pomerol's plateau, Château la Violette is named for the perfume that defines it. Pure Merlot grown on clay over iron-rich crasse de fer, it sits among the appellation's rarest cuvees. The cool 2017 vintage lends freshness to its famously seductive frame.
Deep, glossy crimson, it announces itself with the violets of its name, then plum, black cherry and a dusting of cocoa. The palate is plush and rounded, Merlot's silk to the fore, supported by fine tannins and a savoury, ferrous undertow. Mocha, sweet spice and truffle carry a long, perfumed, velvet-textured finish.
