The wine
Hard against the walls of Château Latour, Léoville Las Cases has long played super-second to the first growths, and rarely with more conviction than here. The 2009 is Saint-Julien at full ripeness, a Cabernet-led blend from one of Bordeaux's most lauded modern vintages, built with the discipline of an estate that answers to no one but itself.
Deep, brooding garnet. The nose unfurls slowly: cassis and blackcurrant leaf, cedar shavings, graphite and a thread of violet. The palate is dense yet poised, tannins fine-grained and tightly woven, framing dark fruit, pencil lead and tobacco. Acidity holds the weight in check. The finish is long, savoury and quietly imposing.
Why we chose it
“A super-second with first-growth ambition, coiled tight and waiting for its decade.”
