The wine
Few wines carry the mythology of Le Pergole Torte. Born in Radda in Chianti in 1977 as the first modern 100 percent Sangiovese, Montevertine's flagship remains a touchstone of purity, made without Chianti Classico's rules and all the better for it. The 2020, in magnum, is built for the cellar.
Luminous ruby, deceptively pale. The perfume is exact and high-toned: wild cherry, raspberry, dried violets, orange peel and a wisp of woodsmoke. The palate is all tension and transparency, racy acidity carrying red fruit over tannins like fine sandpaper. There is iron, dried herb and rose here, nothing superfluous. The finish lingers cool, mineral and long.
Why we chose it
“Sangiovese stripped to its soul: perfume, tension and Radda stone.”
