The wine
Montrachet is the summit of white Burgundy, and young Pierre Girardin handles this most exalted of grand crus with a deft, low-oak touch that lets the site speak. From the narrow strip straddling Puligny and Chassagne, the 2022 vintage delivers a Chardonnay of breathtaking concentration and poise. This is the pinnacle, and it knows it.
Bright gold-green in the glass, exhaling white peach, hazelnut, acacia honey and a flinty wisp of gunsmoke. The palate is vast yet weightless, layered with ripe orchard fruit, lemon curd and toasted almond, all held in suspension by saline, mineral tension. Powerful and persistent, the finish gathers chalk and spice and refuses to let go. Monumental white Burgundy.
