The wine
Once Robin Williams' private mountain vineyard, Pym Rae is now farmed by the Tesseron family of Pontet-Canet, who bring a biodynamic Bordeaux sensibility to its Mount Veeder slopes. The 2016 marries Napa's ripeness with old-world restraint, a mountain Cabernet blend of real elegance and serious cellar potential.
Dense, saturated purple, it leads with blackberry, cassis and dark plum over cedar, sage and a dusting of cocoa. The palate is full yet finely drawn, mountain-grown tannins firm and chalky, the fruit cool and brooding rather than jammy. Savoury graphite and wild herb deepen the mid-palate. The finish is long, structured and faintly mineral.
Why we chose it
“Williams' mountain hideaway, now farmed by Pontet-Canet hands. Napa with a French accent.”
