The wine
Case Basse is sacred ground in Montalcino, the estate where Gianfranco Soldera made Sangiovese into legend through obsessive, uncompromising farming. Now labelled simply as Toscana IGT, the wine loses none of its grandeur: pure Sangiovese of astonishing transparency and lift. The 2018 vintage is perfumed, ethereal and quietly profound.
Luminous garnet, almost weightless in colour, releasing wild cherry, dried rose, blood orange and sandalwood. The palate is silk and air, red-fruited and intensely aromatic, with tannins so fine they nearly dissolve, framed by piercing acidity. Tea leaf, balsamic herb and a saline mineral undertow extend a finish of extraordinary length. A wine that redefines what Sangiovese can be.
