The wine
The house that codified Brunello, in a vintage spoken of with reverence. Biondi Santi farms Il Greppo's high, cool slopes for tension over flesh, and 2016 gave Montalcino a near-perfect growing season. Austere in youth, this is Sangiovese Grosso built for the very long game.
Granite-edged and pale garnet, it opens slowly on sour cherry, dried rose, blood orange and tilled earth. The palate is taut and upright, all sinew and chalk, with savoury herb and balsamic depth beneath the fruit. Tannins are firm and fine-grained, the acidity bracing. A finish of iron and dried flowers holds for minutes.
Why we chose it
“The original, in its long decade of silence. Decant or wait. Either way, wait.”
