The wine
The house that invented Brunello, in a Riserva drawn only from its oldest Greppo vines. Biondi Santi works Sangiovese Grosso with monastic patience, and the warm 2011 is built the old way: austere in youth, coiled, indifferent to anyone in a hurry. This is Montalcino as heritage, not fashion.
Pale ruby fading to brick at the rim, the nose is restrained at first, then unfurls into wild cherry, dried orange peel, iron and sun-warmed earth. The palate is taut and high-toned, tannins firm and chalky, acidity bracing. Tobacco, blood orange and forest floor trail through a finish of remarkable length and quiet authority.
Why we chose it
“Cellar it and forget it. The wine has more patience than you do.”
