The wine
From her cellars in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the formidable Princess Coralia Pignatelli has spent decades making Chianti Classico on her own uncompromising terms. Santacroce is her super-Tuscan statement, Sangiovese boosted by Cabernet Sauvignon in the great 2016 vintage, a wine of old-school patience released only when the estate deems it ready.
Dark ruby with a garnet rim. Aromas of sour cherry, dried rose, leather and sweet tobacco lead into a palate that is firm and sinewy, Sangiovese acidity cutting through ripe black fruit and a Cabernet seam of cassis and cedar. Tannins are dusty and persistent. The finish carries earth, balsamic herbs and time.
