The wine
Il Caberlot is one of wine's true rarities: a single chance crossing of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, propagated by Podere Il Carnasciale and bottled only in magnum. From the hills above Mercatale Valdarno, the 2018 is a singular Tuscan red, made in tiny quantity and sold almost entirely to those in the know.
Inky purple to the rim, it surges with cassis, black plum, graphite and a Franc-derived note of crushed herb and bell pepper leaf. The palate is dense yet lifted, dark fruit framed by tobacco, cedar and fine espresso. Tannins are firm and chalky, acidity bright, the finish long, savoury and mineral.
